SYDNEY, New South Wales, Australia Thursday, 1st March 2007 The NSW Government has launched an AUD12 million safety program to reduce workplace injuries in the manual handling industry. NSW commerce minister John Della Bosca said Safe Manual Handling – Smart Move, launched this week, was a five-year program to reduce manual handling injuries by 40 per cent.
He said it would involve WorkCover NSW working with businesses and workers to provide individual advice and assistance, workshops, conferences and new manual handling resources. He said workplace injuries in NSW were at their lowest level in 18 years, “due to industry and government efforts”, but more needed to be done. “Injuries cost NSW businesses AUD335 million a year. Contrary to popular belief, manual handling is not just lifting. It is any activity that involves lifting, lowering, pushing, pulling, carrying, moving, holding, restraining and stretching. “Every year in NSW, 17,000 workers are injured or fall ill due to manual handling. This represents one third of all workplace injuries." Source: © Forkliftaction.com – materials handling newsletter – 25-01-2007 |
